A wire rope hoist uses a motor-driven drum to wind and unwind a steel wire rope, lifting loads
from a few hundred kilograms up to several tonnes. It’s built for occasional, deliberate vertical
lifts over a long travel distance — positioning machinery, lifting raw material bundles, or moving
finished assemblies. It doesn’t retract instantly like a spring balancer, and it isn’t designed for
the constant pick-up-and-release motion of hand tool use. Choose a wire rope hoist when the
load is too heavy for any spring-loaded device to safely support.
A spring balancer is a compact, spring-loaded device mounted overhead that suspends a tool,
hose, or fixture and counteracts its weight. When the operator pulls the tool down to use it, the
balancer takes the load off their arm. When they let go, the tool retracts smoothly back to a
resting position — no dropping, no strain, no re-hanging it on a hook every time.
Spring balancers are built for repetitive, close-range motion at light to medium weight —
typically 0.5 kg to 50 kg. Think of a nutrunner on a car assembly line, a grinder on a fabrication
bench, or a welding gun that gets picked up and put down hundreds of times a shift. Everything
else on this list handles a different job.
“Industrial lifter” covers general-purpose equipment like scissor lifts, pneumatic lifters, and
vacuum lifters, used to position heavy or awkwardly shaped loads — sheet metal panels,
drums, or pallets — rather than hand tools. These are built for load positioning tasks, not for
supporting a tool an operator holds and uses continuously. If the item being handled is the
workpiece itself rather than a tool, an industrial lifter is usually the right category, not a spring
balancer.
An electric hoist is a motorized lifting device controlled by a pendant or remote, used for
repeated heavy lifts where precise positioning and control matter — loading a component onto a
machine, or raising an assembly to a fixed height. It has no spring mechanism and doesn’t
respond instantly to hand pressure the way a spring balancer does. Electric hoists suit planned,
controlled lifts; spring balancers suit continuous, reflexive tool handling.
A chain pulley block, or manual chain hoist, uses a hand chain and internal gear reduction to let
one person lift a heavy load with minimal physical effort. It’s common in workshops and
warehouses for occasional heavy lifting — engine removal, machinery positioning — where
speed isn’t critical. Unlike a spring balancer, it has no automatic retraction and isn’t meant to
support a tool through hundreds of repetitive cycles a shift.
A ratchet lever hoist, sometimes called a “come-along,” is a portable manual hoist used for
pulling or lifting in tight spaces, often at an angle rather than straight up and down. It’s a rigging
and positioning tool for construction and heavy maintenance work, not a production-line device.
A spring balancer, by contrast, stays permanently mounted overhead at a single workstation for
continuous tool support.
An industrial manipulator is an articulated arm — pneumatic or mechanical — that gives an
operator precise, multi-directional control over positioning a heavier load, typically 10 kg to 500
kg. It’s built for tasks like loading a heavy part into a machine or precisely placing an assembly,
where the operator needs to guide the load through a specific path, not just support its weight
vertically. A spring balancer only counteracts weight along a single vertical line; a manipulator
gives full directional control at a higher weight range.
A zero gravity air balancer sits between a spring balancer and a manipulator. It suspends a
heavier tool (typically above 3–5 kg) so it feels weightless in any direction and holds its position
in mid-air rather than snapping back like a standard spring balancer. It’s the right choice when a
tool needs to be held in an extended or angled position for a long stretch, such as during multi-
pass welding, rather than picked up and released in a quick, repetitive motion.
Line automation replaces manual tool handling altogether with conveyors, robotic arms, or
automated fixtures — it’s a different category of investment entirely, not a piece of equipment
you compare pound-for-pound against a balancer. The practical question isn’t “which is better,”
but “does this station still need a human operator?” Where a station remains manual or semi-
manual, a spring balancer supports the operator. Where a station is fully automated, the
balancer is replaced, not upgraded.
